@Rocket @internetarchive There are extensions to automate it so that every single page you visit is automatically saved if it hasn't been saved in the last 30 days.
I use the Internet Archive Saver, which works on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, etc

"Home movies [...] ancestors of the videos we shot on camcorders and now capture on cell phones. We might think of each home movie as a pixel in a giant collective documentary spanning a hundred years, endless films picturing family, friends, travels, rituals and celebrations."

Update. "EDGI Relaunches Federal Environmental Web Tracker"
https://envirodatagov.org/press-release-edgi-relaunches-federal-environmental-web-tracker/
"In response to the #Trump administration’s rapid dismantling of federal websites, the Environmental Data & Governance Initiative (#EDGI) has relaunched its Federal Environmental Web Tracker…The… Tracker makes records of significant changes to federal environmental websites publicly available in a searchable database…Since the first Trump administration, EDGI has monitored thousands of federal environmental webpages. Partners at the #InternetArchive download these webpages every day, and EDGI’s #OpenSource software compares versions of these webpages to identify differences."

'Jason Scott, self-described "free-range archivist" at the Internet Archive, has announced the launch in full of DISCMASTER 2 — a platform that lets you search for, and view, individual files from a broad range of floppy disk and CD-ROM images stored on the platform, complete with automatic file conversion for modern browsers.'
Update. "Wayback Machine Saves Thousands of Federal Webpages Amid Purge of Government Data Under Trump"
https://www.democracynow.org/2025/2/28/internet_archive_trump_admin_data_purge
"Thousands of informational government webpages have been taken down so far in the second #Trump administration, including on public health, scientific research and LGBTQ rights. Amid this mass erasure of public information, the #InternetArchive is racing to save copies of those deleted resources."
Update. "How the Wayback Machine is preserving outdated government websites."

"The #WaybackMachine is helping preserve the record of government websites before they were changed by the TTrump administration. CBS News Confirmed's Rhona Tarrant reports."
@egonw Ah that's smart, retroactively issuing DOIs for URLs which got cited in order to use #CrossRef citation infra.
I'd be curious to see how many outlinks of paywalled publications the #InternetArchive has managed to archive. Can one extract links from the full text with #ISTEX (https://social.numerique.gouv.fr/@InistCNRS/113940816034538571)? Maybe @chipotte knows.
In today’s post on @medium, I describe how the @internetarchive and @wikipedia are preserving a record of the changes made by the #Trump administration.

This is where the @internetarchive and their Wayback Machine really shows its value. Presumably they've been taking snapshots of all government websites for years, so we can compare versions from BOS (Before Orange Stalin) with those from DOS (During Orange Stalin).
Federal data is disappearing. On Thursday (TODAY), meet the teams working to rescue it and learn how you can help.
Join the Internet Archive and the Library Innovation Lab on Feb. 13, 3pm Eastern for a special event exploring the terabytes of data they have already saved and how to access it.
You can use the #InternetArchive to access historical versions, but #GovWayback makes it even more straightforward:
GovWayback is a simple tool to quickly access archived versions of government websites from before January 20, 2025 – just add wayback.com after “.gov” in any government URL. GovWayback automatically redirects you to that page’s archived version from Internet Archive.

I just browsed the most fun, weird and colorful knitting/crochet book: Really wild tea cosies by Loani Prior.
I also didn’t know you could borrow books on the Internet Archive like this, I love this.
I probably won’t make any of those any time soon (or I’d probably buy the book) but I really enjoyed looking at all those beautiful pictures.
@rasterweb, being able to access this archive and even retell this story is grounded in the existence of @internetarchive
The #InternetArchive has been under a sustained DDOS attack for about a year. An adversary is trying to drive up their expenses and force them to scale back or go offline.
Please support the Internet Archive by supporting its IT defense, technically and legally.
So... one thing that I think is going to happen in the next few years is that the #Trump Administration will go after the #InternetArchive . Since they are obviously highly interested in rewriting history to suit their agenda, the Wayback Machine is going to be seen as an obvious threat.
And taking them down is probably not going to be hard. Not only is the Internet Archive an US-based organization, but they are already in legal jeopardy due to their "National Emergency Library" and their hosting of a lot of copyrighted material which is easily legally available.
So... _do_ we have a backup plan for preserving the digital history of the Internet - one hosted in a jurisdiction that is safer (for now)? Or are we are just going to have to accept that this will be gone forever?
Does anyone know of organized efforts to backup publicly available datasets from US government websites? I want to join any efforts to preserve datasets, especially for NOAA. #noaa #data #science #academia #internetarchive

Hey @internetarchive I'm trying to find some details on how you operate, and notably where your servers are hosted and mirrored. It would seem the US isn't terribly reliable soil for this kind of thing any longer, especially when it comes to certain material. Any chance there's a way for non-US home servers to chip in with a few TiB here or there?
