i just learned that the closest known black hole to our solar system is ~1,500 LY away & called Gaia BH1.

It is a stellar-mass black hole in a binary system, orbiting a G-type star.

It's located in the #constellation #Ophiuchus.

If you want to learn about the #astronomy & #mythology of the constellation Ophiuchus, check out (though the omission of Gaia BH1 is 😱 !): starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/

Interesting, the new Miyoshi paper has some pretty strong words about the EHT data "suggesting that the EHT 2017 u-v coverage is insufficient for reliable imaging" or "possible that the data are corrupted to the degree that the shape [...] cannot be determined from the residual analysis of the closure quantity". They do not see a ring but a strong peak, possibly offset from the black hole location.

I feel like all that time I’ve been practicing shading is starting to pay off.

Sitting atop a fractal surface of black holes, Tribert tries to make Adenine, one of the molecules in DNA, but he didn’t get it quite right, probably because he got distracted by the cats. Maybe next time, Tribert.

Happy #BlackHoleWeek to those who celebrate! Here's a pic I took a few years ago back when I worked at ESO's Paranal Observatory in #Chile. One of our 8.2 m telescopes was pointing at the centre of the #MilkyWay, home to Sagittarius A*, a #BlackHole 4 million times more massive than the #Sun.

Astronomers devoted almost a century to unmask this beast:

until the Event Horizon Telescope finally imaged it:
